Sir Syed Ahmed Khan

Sir Syed Ahmed Khan born on 17th October 1817 is commonly known as Sir Syed, was an Indian Muslim pragmatist, Islamic modernist, philosopher and Social activist of 19th century India. He was one of the founder of the Aligarh Muslim University. Sir Syed earned a reputation as a distinguished scholar while working as jurist for British Government.


He was a great thinker of Muslim’s future in India and believing that future of Muslim’s was threatened by the rigidity of British out look, Sir Syed Ahmed began promoting western style Scientific Education by founding modern Schools and Journals and organizing Muslim entrepreneurs. towards this goal he founded the famous ‘Aligarh Muslim University(AMU) earlier known as Anglo Muhammadan Oriental College in 1875 with aim of promoting Social, Scientific and Economic development of Indian Muslims.


Sir Syed Ahmed Khan was interested in the education of both Muslims and Hindus and visualised India as a ‘Beautiful Bride’. As a result of this view he was regarded as a reformer and nationalist leader.


 The main aim of this centre is evaluation of the reports and recommendation of different committees constituted by the Government of India and Government of Karnataka .A Minority study chair is established in National Law School Bangalore to conduct study, Research, seminars etc. and to promote M.Phil and P.hd Scholars in Minority Related issues.


 Sir Syed was a prophet of education (Mahatma Gandhi)

 “The real greatness of the man (Sir Saiyad) consists in the fact that he was the first Indian Muslim who felt the need of a fresh orientation of Islam and worked for it’’ (Sir Allama Iqbal)

 “Sir Syed was an ardent reformer and he wanted to reconcile modern scientific thought with religion by rationalistic interpretations and not by attacking basic belief. He was anxious to push new education. He was in no way communally separatist. Repeatedly he emphasized that religious differences should have no political and national significance”. ( Jawaharlal Nehru, Former Prime Minister of India)
